Spirituality -- a discussion

What is meant by the term spiritual? To some people spiritual means religious as it is only through religion that they have come into contact with spiritual issues. For many people, their spiritual life begins and ends in church. They find their connection with their spirit through the practice of religion.

For others spirituality is a quest. It is a search for meaning, for life's purpose. Many people search for spiritual insights and wisdom by looking for books, CDs, or spiritual teachers, through whom they hope to find spiritual wisdom and spiritual insights.

What are the qualities of those people that others see as spiritual? Reflecting on the world's great spiritual teachers, names such as Jesus, Buddah, the Prophet Muhammed, come to mind as people who have been given the place in history. Then there are the great saints and sages who lived a loving and spiritual life.

Who are the world's current spiritual masters? What is it that qualifies them for that title.

In the modern world there are many people who have written about their ideas on spirituality. Through their books they have become well known throughout the world. Names such as Deepak Chopra, Carolyn Myss, Louise Hay, Eckhart Tolle, Wayne Dwyer are often mentioned in groups where the discussion of spirituality takes place.

Also commonly discussed are the many religious traditions each with significant teachers arising during history. Judaism, Islam, Hindism, Buddism and the Catholic traditions are but a few.

I asked some people, including my 13yr old son and my 16 yr old daughter what is Spirituality…. Their answers were…..

The thoughts and feelings of the spirit inside you.

Inner sense.

Inner guidance

Connection with the divine.

A way of life in connection with the divine.

Going with the flow

A belief in more than your physical being on earth

A Belief in a Higher Power

Listening to the voice of your spirit

The voice of God

It is very personal

Going into another state of being

The essence of you that is believed to be immortal.

I am the car and my spirit is the driver.

Although spirituality means different things to different people, the essence of the meaning is clear.

It involves a Higher Power, a force beyond the mind, beyond the body and beyond logic. It survives beyond death. It connects you to all living beings. Its essence is unconditional love. It leads you to a life of service to others. It requires deep surrender. It tends to come into your life in times of extreme hardship/ personal loss or suffering. It takes you beyond those events to a different way of life. It is impersonal. It is eternal. It can be found in different ways and by different paths. It is hard to explain in words and yet its presence in people is instantly recognizable. It creates a different aura in those it touches,, a different energy and way of being. It spreads to others in a subtle yet powerful way, without effort. It creates a life flow which is beyond logic and the mind. It has surprising outcomes. It is why we are here.
